The Tech Innovation Awards (TIA) is gearing up for its 8th edition, scheduled for November 2nd, 2024, at the Oriental Hotel in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.
This prestigious event celebrates the achievements of Africa’s leading and most innovative technology experts shaping the future of the continent’s technological landscape.
This year’s theme, “Excellence in Digital Innovations,” highlights the transformative impact of technology across the West African nation, spotlighting strides in sectors such as fintech, healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Now in its eighth year, the TIA has grown into the most esteemed accolade in the ICT space, recognizing organizations, individuals, governments, and private sector entities that have distinguished themselves and are at the forefront of digitization with innovative products and services that drive the industry forward.
In an era defined by swift technological advancements, TIA acknowledges the central role of technology across various sectors in Africa. From pioneering research to evolving applications, the awards program honours exceptional contributions from innovators nationwide.
In digital governance, Nigeria stands out as a regional leader. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G5 Benchmark, the West African nation boasts one of Africa’s largest economies and ICT sectors, underpinned by a robust institutional framework for ICT, IT, and digital transformation. Nigeria’s path to G5 regulation offers valuable insights for regulators and policymakers regionally and globally.
The Group Publisher of Digital Economy Magazine Akin Naphtal, stated, “Nigeria has firmly established itself as a leader in tech growth within Africa, demonstrating exceptional innovation and entrepreneurship. Our nation is home to a flourishing tech scene, characterized by an increasing number of startups, tech hubs, and innovation centers.”
According to the International Trade Administration, Nigeria leads Africa’s ICT market, with 82% of telecom subscribers and 29% of internet usage. The Sub-Saharan African telecom market is growing at a 4.6% CAGR, with Nigeria accounting for over 55% of this growth. As of June 2022, Nigeria had 85 million broadband subscriptions (44% penetration) and 206 million voice lines (108% tele density).
“The Tech Innovation Awards (TIA) celebrate Nigeria’s technology champions, innovators, creativity, and inventions across multiple areas. Their contributions have immensely impacted the African economy’s tech ecosystem.” Naphtal added
He concluded, “Notably, Lagos stands as the only African city ranked in the global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems in 2023, and of Africa’s seven tech unicorns, five hail from Nigeria. The contributions of our technology industry to the economy have been profound, driving growth, job creation, and attracting significant foreign direct investment.”
