Backed by 24 years of distinguished and vast experience rising through the ranks of Cameroon’s top technology organizations, Barbara Melem has exhibited true leadership, which requires balancing bottom-line performance with real-world impact, especially in a career built on a powerful tripartite -strategic communication, business performance, and sustainable development.
Since 2021, Melem has championed this holistic approach as Senior Manager of Communications & Sustainability at IHS Cameroon, driving corporate reputation and high-impact ESG strategies that deliver equal value to the boardroom and society.
Mastering the Intersection of Communications and Technology
At IHS Cameroon, a leading tower infrastructure company, Melem has fully leveraged her deep understanding of the telecom sector. She oversees the development and implementation of the company’s corporate communications strategy while ensuring alignment with broader business objectives.
Her ability to translate complex technological infrastructure initiatives into accessible, stakeholder-friendly narratives has strengthened IHS Cameroon’s position in a competitive market.

Her work consistently operates at the cutting edge of digital transformation. From managing media relations at MTN to designing comprehensive communication strategies at IHS, Foka has mastered the art of positioning technology companies as responsible corporate citizens in Cameroon’s evolving digital economy.
A Champion of Sustainability and ESG Excellence
One of Melem’s most significant contributions lies in elevating sustainability within the telecom and infrastructure space. She develops and executes IHS Cameroon’s Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, focusing on energy efficiency, waste reduction, carbon footprint management, and community impact. Under her leadership, the company has established strategic partnerships with international and local organizations, creating a robust framework for responsible business operations.
Her achievements include pioneering the first private partnership with USAID in Cameroon since 2010, launching the Tower Kiosk Project with UNHCR to support crisis-affected regions in the North-West and South-West, and securing an MOU with UNICEF for the “Connect My School” initiative to expand digital learning opportunities. She has also forged partnerships with NABU for STEM education and with AICS to support youth training programmes.

Building Bridges for Women, Youth, and Lasting Impact
Beyond corporate deliverables, Melem is deeply committed to inclusive leadership. A former Secretary General of the Orange Women Association, she has trained over 300 mother-girls in skills development and economic inclusion. She continues this legacy as a mentor with Corporate Women in Leadership and as a member of UNICEF’s inaugural “Ma Cota” mentorship cohort.
Her leadership philosophy centers on long-term value creation, inclusive growth, and institutional resilience. Through mentorship programmes for female employees at IHS Cameroon and her active role in gender advocacy, she has become a powerful role model for women and youth across Cameroon’s corporate landscape.
From Classroom to Corporate Leadership
Melem’s journey began with a strong academic foundation. She holds a Master 2 in Communication, Event & Advertising from Douala University, a Certification in Digital Marketing from Digital College Paris, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Curriculum Studies & Teaching (English) from Buea University. These qualifications, combined with her early career in customer care and loyalty management at Orange Cameroon, laid the groundwork for a remarkable ascent in the corporate world.

Her transition from frontline customer service roles between 2002 and 2013 to senior communication positions at MTN Cameroon and later SOSUCAM demonstrated her exceptional ability to manage reputation, craft compelling narratives, and build stakeholder trust in fast-paced, high-stakes environments. At SOSUCAM, she launched the company’s first magazine, The Sugar Valley News, and played a key role in major corporate events and industry association development. These experiences sharpened her expertise in strategic communication and positioned her as a trusted advisor to executive teams.
Today, Melem remains a respected voice at the intersection of performance, purpose, and legacy. Her work at IHS Cameroon exemplifies how strategic communication and sustainability leadership can drive both business success and meaningful societal transformation in Africa’s dynamic telecom sector. As Cameroon continues its digital and sustainable development journey, leaders like Vedette Barbara Melem Foka are proving that true impact lies in the thoughtful alignment of technology, communication, and human-centered development.
