In a crucial move to enhance the aviation industry, Safaricom, one of Kenya’s leading telecommunications operators, has entered into a strategic partnership with Kenya Airways aimed at enhancing the airline’s operational efficiency and customer experience. This collaboration is set to introduce state-of-the-art technologies and innovative solutions across various facets of air travel and aviation services.
The partnership will address multiple key areas, starting with in-flight services. Passengers can look forward to improved in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity, ensuring a seamless online experience during their journeys. Additionally, the alliance will bolster cybersecurity measures to safeguard the airline’s digital infrastructure and customer data, reinforcing trust in the airline’s services.
Customer experience remains a focal point of this collaboration, with both companies committed to leveraging technology to elevate the overall travel experience. This includes enhancing infrastructure inspection and security surveillance within the aviation sector using cutting-edge technologies. Furthermore, the partnership will develop new loyalty programs aimed at rewarding frequent flyers and boosting customer retention.
Another crucial aspect of this collaboration is its emphasis on data science and software development. These initiatives are geared toward optimizing airline operations and introducing innovative solutions within the aviation industry. Interestingly, the partnership also ventures into the agricultural sector, exploring potential cross-industry innovations.
A significant portion of the partnership’s efforts will focus on implementing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. These IoT applications will be integrated into various airline operations, including warehousing, baggage tracking, and the management of aircraft materials. The technology will also be applied to Unit Load Devices (ULDs)—containers used for luggage and cargo—enabling efficient tracking, location management, reconciliation, and stock-taking.
Fredrick Kitunga, Chief Information and Data Officer at Kenya Airways, emphasized the long-term benefits of the partnership, highlighting how it addresses current challenges while paving the way for sustainable growth. “This collaboration lays the foundation for enhanced connectivity and transformative innovations that will benefit our customers and communities for years to come,” Kitunga stated.
Cynthia Kropac, Head of Business at Safaricom, underscored the alignment of this partnership with Safaricom’s broader strategy. “By combining Kenya Airways’ expertise in safe air travel with Safaricom’s advanced communications and technology capabilities, we aim to ensure seamless connectivity for our customers throughout their travels,” Kropac said.
This partnership is a key element of Safaricom’s strategy to expand its reach and enhance its service offerings through strategic alliances. In recent years, Safaricom has actively pursued partnerships and expansions, most notably its entry into the Ethiopian market.

Following its expansion into Ethiopia in August 2022, Safaricom launched commercial operations in the Tigray region in June 2023. This expansion was bolstered by substantial financial support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).
Safaricom’s expansion strategy also extends to the financial sector, with the recent launch of its mobile financial services platform, M-Pesa, in Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone.
These strategic moves underscore Safaricom’s commitment to extending its footprint and enhancing service delivery across diverse markets. The collaboration with Kenya Airways represents a significant step in this direction, promising to bring innovative solutions to the aviation industry while improving the customer experience in air travel.
