Meta Platforms’ CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has revealed that Threads, the company’s newest social media venture, has surpassed 175 million monthly active users just ahead of its first anniversary.
Threads, introduced on 5th July 2023, gained rapid traction, amassing 100 million users in less than a week. This surge was partly attributed to its integration with Instagram, allowing its users to easily create Threads profiles. However, the platform eventually lost many of the initial user.
Reflecting on the platform’s journey, Zuckerberg shared in a Threads post, “What a year.” Back in April, he had reported that the monthly active user (MAU) count had exceeded 150 million, showcasing consistent growth.
Despite the impressive MAU numbers, the overall popularity of Threads remains unclear, as the platform has not disclosed metrics such as daily active users and average time spent per user. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower highlighted that while Threads expanded its user base through international growth and new features, it has faced challenges in sustaining user engagement.
Reuters reported that last month, Sensor Tower saw users averaging only three sessions and seven minutes per day on the app, a decline of about 79% and 65%, respectively, compared to figures from July last year.
Threads currently operates without advertising, resulting in minimal revenue generation for Meta. Recently, the platform joined the Fediverse, a collective of social media sites supporting the ActivityPub protocol, enabling user interaction across these platforms.
