In a remarkable announcement of executive appointments, the MTN Group has named Mohammed Rufai as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Congo-Brazzaville, while Ayham Moussa will take over as Chief Operations Officer (COO) of MTN Nigeria.
Rufai, a recipient of the 2017 edition of the Ghana Information Technology & Telecom Awards (GITTA), who currently holds the position of Chief Technical Officer at MTN Nigeria, will assume the new role on September 1.
With over 24 years of experience in the ICT sector, Rufai has been with MTN since 2002. His career with MTN began in Nigeria and later took him to Ghana, where he served as Chief Technical Officer from 2015. and has occupied several senior roles within the MTN Group, including Regional CTIO for Southeast Africa and Ghana.
He is also a board member of Bayobab (Nigeria) and MTN Benin. Rufai is noted for his commitment to excellence, people development, and enhancing customer experience. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and advanced management certifications from Lagos Business School, Cranfield University, and the University of Cambridge.
Rufai will succeed Ayham Moussa at MTN Congo-Brazzaville, who will transition to the COO role at MTN Nigeria on August 19.
Moussa, who joined MTN in 2002, has held various senior positions across the organization, including CEO of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. His leadership in technology roles has been pivotal in advancing the digital landscape from 2G to 4G in Congo-Brazzaville, earning the company multiple awards for the best network in West and Central Africa. Moussa’s tenure as CEO was marked by accelerated growth, improved margins, and operational excellence.
MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita expressed gratitude to Djibril Ouattara and Hassan Jabber for their significant contributions. Ouattara has been a key figure in MTN’s growth in Congo-Brazzaville and the turnaround of MTN Côte d’Ivoire over nearly nine years. Jabber’s 22-year tenure included leadership roles as CEO in Sudan, Guinea-Conakry, and Afghanistan, among others.
MTN Côte d’Ivoire’s CEO Djibril Ouattara is set to retire early, and MTN Nigeria’s COO Hassan Jabber will be leaving the company.
