Huawei Technologies has announced significant advancements in operating systems (OS) and artificial intelligence (AI), claiming it has achieved in ten years what took some European countries three decades.
The Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, made the announcement at the opening of a three-day developer conference in Dongguan, China. He revealed that the company’s Harmony operating system is now available on more than 900 million devices.
“Harmony has made major breakthroughs. You can say in 10 years we’ve achieved what it took our European and American counterparts more than 30 years to do, in terms of building the core technology of an independent operating system,” Yu stated.
HarmonyOS, Huawei’s proprietary operating system, was launched in 2019 after US technology restrictions severed its access to Google support for Android on its smartphones. The company has since made significant progress in establishing HarmonyOS as a competitive alternative.
Yu also highlighted the success of Huawei’s Ascend artificial intelligence infrastructure, noting it is now the second most popular AI system globally, trailing only Nvidia, which leads the AI chip market.
“Operating systems and other software have long been dominated by Europe and the US, but the era of the internet of things has provided Huawei an opportunity to overtake them,” Yu said.
Huawei’s smartphone business has seen a resurgence, particularly following the launch of the Mate60 last year, which features an improved China-made chip. Sales of Harmony-equipped smartphones have surged by 68% in the first five months of the year, Yu reported.
