MTN Uganda, under the leadership of CEO Sylvia Mulinge, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) to deliver tailored ICT and mobile money services to over 780 hotels, marking a significant step in its transformation into a technology company (Techco).
The agreement, announced last week, aims to revolutionize Uganda’s hospitality and tourism sectors, which employ over 70% of the country’s tourism workforce.
The partnership will see MTN Mobile Money and MTN’s Enterprise Business Unit provide solutions to enhance efficiency and customer convenience. Hotels will gain access to mobile payment systems for reservations and bill payments, integrated with hotel management systems, as well as affordable guest Wi-Fi, unified communications, and software-as-a-service tools.
This move aligns with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy to shift from a traditional telecom provider to a Techco by fostering digital innovation through strategic alliances.

Dennis Kakonge, General Manager of Corporate Services at MTN Mobile Money, emphasized that the deal will enable hotels to serve both local and international guests with modern payment methods, leveraging MTN’s extensive mobile money network.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of MTN Enterprise Business, highlighted the partnership’s role in supporting innovation and economic growth, stating, “This MOU reaffirms our commitment to digital inclusion and enhancing customer experiences in key sectors like hospitality.”
MTN and UHOA plan to launch a sector-wide engagement to assess hotel owners’ technology needs, ensuring tailored solutions. The collaboration reflects MTN’s broader strategy of working with governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders to create a conducive environment for digital transformation across Africa.
