Hon. William Kabogo Gitau has stepped into the role of Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy in Kenya, taking over from Dr Margaret Ndung’u who was assigned to another role.
Kabogo entered the political arena in 2002, vying for the Juja Parliamentary Seat under the KANU ticket. Although unsuccessful in his first attempt, he demonstrated resilience by switching to the lesser-known Sisi Kwa Sisi party, where he triumphed over the incumbent, Stephen Ndichu, in the general elections.
However, his political career faced a hurdle in 2007 when George Thuo claimed the seat. Refusing to be sidelined, Kabogo successfully petitioned the election results, leading to a by-election where he won decisively on a Narc-Kenya ticket.
In 2013, Kabogo’s political journey reached a new height when he became the first Governor of Kiambu County following a victorious run in the gubernatorial elections. During his tenure, he was lauded for implementing initiatives to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Despite these accomplishments, his political trajectory hit in 2017 when he lost his bid for re-election to Ferdinand Waititu. Kabogo’s independent candidacy, following his defeat in the Jubilee Party’s nominations, proved to be a challenging route in a county deeply aligned with Jubilee’s stronghold.
In addition to his political achievements, Kabogo’s influence extends to his role as the Party Leader of the Tujibebe Wakenya Party, where he advocates for progressive governance and inclusive development. His leadership in public service, combined with his extensive ICT background, positions him as a key player in steering Kenya’s digital economy towards global competitiveness.
Kabogo’s journey into leadership began with his early education at St. George’s Ruiru Primary School, followed by Thika Technical School between 1975 and 1978. He later pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Punjab University in India, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors in governance and business.
As the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, Kabogo is poised to lead Kenya’s digital transformation. His strategic vision, honed through years of governance and a deep understanding of the ICT landscape, is expected to drive innovation, bridge the digital divide, and solidify Kenya’s position as a technological hub in Africa. His appointment signifies not just a new chapter in his career but also a promising future for Kenya’s information and communications sector.
