Microsoft Africa’s Chief Technology and Solutions Officer, Ravi Bhat, engaged in an insightful conversation about the transformative impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on the continent.
Speaking via Connecting Africa, he described GenAI as a “revolutionary technology,” Bhat likened its significance to that of the printing press in the 14th century and electricity in the 19th century. “What those did to the world is what generative AI is going to do going forward,” he remarked.
Bhat highlighted the growing adoption of AI in African enterprises while addressing challenges such as limited access and the need for enhanced digital skills. He pointed out that Africa’s mobile-first nature offers a unique advantage. “I think we have an opportunity to jump the cloud-first scenario and go straight into an AI-first scenario,” he said.
Emphasizing AI’s broad applicability, Bhat encouraged businesses across all sectors to view it as a critical tool, not just a domain for technology professionals. “Our ability to innovate depends on how much we can imagine and what business problems you want to solve,” he noted.

He urged young people and professionals alike to embrace AI wholeheartedly. “This is not hype, this is a reality, it’s here. Skill yourself up, understand the language of AI, and make sure you are embracing it with two arms,” he concluded.
The discussion underscored AI’s transformative potential in reshaping industries and preparing Africa for a dynamic digital future.
