Google has marked the 20th anniversary of its navigation app, Google Maps, a platform that has transformed how over 2 billion users navigate and explore the world each month.
In celebration of the milestone, the company highlighted the most-reviewed locations in Nigeria, showcasing the app’s growing influence on travel and local discovery.
Speaking on the anniversary, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Google West Africa emphasized the evolution of Google Maps from a basic navigation tool into a dynamic platform that enhances global mobility.
“In the past two decades, Google Maps has provided over one trillion kilometers of directions, demonstrating its critical role in shaping users’ understanding of the world,” Kola-Ogunlade said. He noted that the platform features over 250 million businesses and places, with 500 million people contributing updates each year. Additionally, Google Maps processes 100 million daily updates to ensure users have access to accurate and up-to-date information.
To mark the occasion, Google revealed Nigeria’s most-reviewed locations, spotlighting top-rated restaurants, cafes, visitor attractions, parks, and museums. Among the most-reviewed restaurants are Mega Chicken and Farmcity Lekki, while Flowershop Cafe and Oliver Cafe lead the list of most-reviewed cafes.

Kola-Ogunlade further noted that Dimplediva Scent and Oniru Private Beach ranked among the most popular visitor attractions, while City Park in Abuja and Muri Okunola Park in Lagos were highly rated among parks. The National Museums in Benin and Lagos also emerged as top-reviewed cultural sites.
“With Google Maps, Nigerians can confidently navigate their surroundings, explore new destinations, and uncover hidden gems,” Kola-Ogunlade added.
As Google Maps continues to evolve, its role in navigation, exploration, and community engagement is expected to grow, further enriching users’ experiences worldwide.
