Ericsson and Comsol have showcased their private 5G solution at the African Mining Indaba conference, highlighting its potential to drive digital transformation in the mining sector.
The two companies are leveraging advanced connectivity to enhance safety, communication, and operational efficiency through autonomous or remote-controlled vehicles, asset tracking, and improved worker connectivity.
Addressing Connectivity Challenges
In a joint statement, Ericsson and Comsol noted that mining operations often face connectivity hurdles, including hard-to-reach service areas, network congestion, and Wi-Fi limitations. These challenges have slowed the adoption of smart mining solutions.
To address these issues, the companies presented their private 5G technology, designed to offer a more reliable and high-speed network tailored to the mining industry.
Ericsson’s Private 5G solution integrates its dual-mode core and radio portfolio to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance 4G and 5G connectivity. The company emphasized that the pre-integrated solution enables rapid deployment, facilitating advanced, intelligent operations in various mining environments.
“This joint participation at the conference aims to support the growth of enterprise business in South Africa and strengthen the country’s and industry’s strategic objectives,” Ericsson and Comsol stated.
Industry Leaders Endorse 5G for Mining
Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West and Southern Africa, emphasized the importance of the partnership in transforming the mining industry.
“Our instrumental participation at the African Mining Indaba allowed us to engage directly with industry leaders and showcase how our technology can contribute to a more connected and sustainable future in mining in partnership with Comsol,” Kassi said.
Gary Woolley, Chief Commercial Officer at Comsol, also highlighted the significance of the event in advancing connectivity solutions.
“The African Mining Indaba conference provided an excellent platform to engage with industry leaders and explore how advanced connectivity solutions can drive growth and sustainability in the mining sector,” Woolley stated.
