Meta-owned social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, have been facing widespread issues which reportedly began on Tuesday morning, leaving millions of users globally unable to access their accounts or refresh their feeds.
Many users have reported being logged out of their Facebook accounts and encountering difficulty logging back in. Instagram users have also experienced issues refreshing their feeds. Users of Threads, Meta’s messaging app, have encountered complete downtime, with the app displaying an error message upon opening.
Meta has acknowledged the issue on its status page, with a statement timestamped 10:17AM ET, stating, “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
Meta’s head of communications, Andy Stone, confirmed the company’s awareness of the situation, stating, “We are aware people are having trouble accessing our services.” He assured users that Meta is “working on this now.”
The impact of the outage extends beyond social media platforms, as some users are also experiencing issues logging into their Meta Quest headsets. Meta suffered a similar outage in 2021, when a configuration issue led to several hours of downtime for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
While WhatsApp remains unaffected, reports on Downdetector have rapidly spiked for Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Additionally, global network trackers such as NetBlocks have noted that the issue is affecting multiple countries simultaneously.
With Meta’s engineering teams working to restore full functionality to the affected platforms, users can do nothing but wait.
