In an inspiring turn of events, 9mobile has ushered in a new chapter by appointing a telecommunication industry leader and an Africa Digital Economy Award winner, Obafemi Banigbe as its Chief Executive Officer.
This strategic decision is a germane part of the company’s vision to propel business transformation and strengthen its market position, currently marked by under 12 million active subscribers as of March 2024.
The Board of Directors of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), operating as 9mobile, announced Banigbe’s appointment, succeeding outgoing CEO Juergen Peschel.
This transition reflects 9mobile’s unwavering commitment to ensuring business continuity and a seamless progression into its holistic transformation. Peschel will remain with the company as a consultant, lending his expertise to support ongoing transformation efforts initiated under his leadership.
Banigbe is not just a name in the Technology space, but an epitome of innovation and strategic leadership. As a seasoned technology executive, entrepreneur, and consultant, he possessed an outstanding legacy of driving technological advancements and spearheading strategic initiatives across various pivotal markets in Africa.
Banigbe started his career at Alogen Ventures, where he assumed the role of a Network Engineer. He moved to Ericsson as the System Support Engineer, rising to the role of NSG Manager on Access and Transport Network Group before moving to V-mobile and then Celtel.
Banigbe served as Chief Operations Officer at Millicom Ghana. His tenure at Millicom Group saw him take roles as Interim CEO and Chief Technical Officer for both Millicom Ghana and Millicom International Cellular Tanzania.
He co-founded Silver Rock Technology Services Ghana, a strategic advisory firm specializing in the Telecom, Media, and Technology sectors.
He has also served as a Non-Executive Director at Amplitude Telecoms in Nigeria and contributed to the successful acquisition of Vodafone Ghana as an Advisory Board member for Telecel Group. Additionally, he provided strategic insights to the Nsano Group, and offered guidance on product development and market entry strategies to Kirusa Group in New Jersey, USA.
