MTN Group has announced the extension of Ralph Mupita’s tenure as Group President and CEO, securing his leadership until August 31, 2030. Mupita, who originally held a contract set to expire on September 30, 2025, received the extension following approval by the group’s board.
MTN’s Group Chairman, Mcebisi Jonas, emphasized the significance of continuity during challenging global and regional times. “Extending Mupita’s tenure will allow MTN to effectively navigate the complex geopolitical dynamics, market volatility, and macroeconomic challenges affecting the business,” Jonas said. He added that the decision ensures the company focuses on strategic priorities and on commitments to shareholders and stakeholders.
A Proven Leader
Mupita has been at the helm of MTN since September 2020, transitioning from his previous role as Group CFO. He succeeded Rob Shuter, who opted not to renew his contract after nearly four years as CEO. Mupita initially joined MTN in April 2017 as Group CFO, bringing extensive leadership experience, including five years as CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets.
Under his leadership, MTN has faced and managed significant challenges. In August 2024, the company reported a half-year loss attributed to the devaluation of the Nigerian naira and ongoing conflict in Sudan. Additionally, Mupita oversaw the decision to exit operations in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry, citing their inability to sustain growth.
Board Confidence Amid Challenges
Despite allegations of favoritism against members of the Group’s executive in September 2024, the MTN board publicly reaffirmed its support for Mupita. An independent review cleared him of any wrongdoing, with the board highlighting its trust in his leadership during turbulent times.

“The independent report stated that attempts to engage with the complainant were unsuccessful and found no evidence of improper conduct by those cited in the complaint,” MTN said in a statement.
Driving Forward with Strategic Wins
Even amidst difficulties, MTN has made notable strides under Mupita’s stewardship. In recent months, the company launched commercial 5G networks in Benin and the Republic of Congo, further solidifying its leadership in technology innovation. Additionally, MTN Nigeria’s 5G network was recognized as the fastest in the West and Central African region by Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data.
Mupita’s influence extends beyond MTN. In October 2024, he was one of two African telecom CEOs elected to the GSMA board for the 2025–2026 term, underscoring his growing prominence in the global telecommunications industry.
