The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has inaugurated the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce (NSCI-ITF), marking a shift in Nigeria’s sovereign cloud strategy from framework development to coordinated implementation and delivery.
The National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI), coordinated by NITDA, provides a national framework aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital sovereignty and developing a secure, resilient, competitive and investment-ready cloud and digital infrastructure ecosystem.
The initiative is designed to enhance the protection and assurance of critical digital assets while promoting innovation, indigenous capacity, private-sector investment and access to global technologies.

The inauguration of the NSCI-ITF follows the development and launch of the initiative’s regulatory, technical, assurance and investment instruments, which establish the foundation for cloud adoption, data governance, infrastructure assurance, technical standards and investment across Nigeria’s cloud and data-centre ecosystem.
According to NITDA, the taskforce will serve as the principal multi-stakeholder mechanism for driving and coordinating implementation of the NSCI. Its priorities will include regulatory concurrence and alignment, institutional coordination, operationalisation of NSCI instruments, resolution of cross-cutting implementation constraints and monitoring of implementation.
The taskforce will also support cloud adoption, infrastructure development, indigenous capacity building and investment mobilisation.
NITDA clarified that the NSCI-ITF will complement rather than replace the statutory responsibilities of participating regulators and government institutions. Instead, it will promote regulatory coherence and coordinated implementation while enabling each institution to continue exercising its responsibilities within its statutory mandate.
The approach is expected to establish a common national baseline while accommodating legitimate sector-specific requirements.
Through coordinated implementation, the NSCI is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure resilience, expand domestic cloud and data-centre capacity, increase indigenous participation and attract sustainable private investment.
The initiative also seeks to position Nigeria as a trusted destination for cloud and digital infrastructure investment in Africa.
With the inauguration of the implementation taskforce, the emphasis of the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative now shifts decisively toward implementation, institutional alignment, investment and measurable national outcomes.
