The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, has launched the Jitume Centre at The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP), calling on the youth to take advantage of government investment in the Jitume Labs program at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to acquire digital skills and access credible digital jobs.
“The Jitume Lab project seeks to address issues of connectivity, device access, and digital skills, as well as job opportunities targeted for the Youth countrywide,” said Owalo. He added that through the Jitume program, the government is looking to train youth on ICT skills using existing TVET institutions to create a critical mass of skilled labor to support and benefit from the digital economy.
The Jitume Centre will have two main programs; the Jitume Class training component and the Jitume Kazi work hub. The Jitume Class aims to provide enhanced training on skills for the digital economy through a physical and virtual program delivery component supported by partners. On the other hand, the Jitume Kazi work hub provides a conducive environment for access to digitally-enabled jobs, sourced locally and internationally through identified partners.

Owalo emphasized that the Jitume project seeks to equip the youth with digital skills to support the Kenya National Digital Master Plan (2022-2032), which aims to skill over one million youths with ICT skills annually to enter the job market.
“The opportunities in the digital world are immense. I encourage you to take initiative – Jitume Class, Jitume Kazi – take advantage of this program and be a part of the over one million youths who will benefit in the next 3 to 5 years,” added Owalo.
The Jitume Labs have been opened at TVET institutions to benefit from the existing governance system and attract the many youth and human resource, said Owalo. Each Jitume Center will have up to 100 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with broadband connectivity, reliable power, and a security and program coordinator provided by Konza Technopolis, the lead partner in the program.
