American Tower Corporation (ATC) Uganda has partnered with NEC XON, selecting the company’s equipment to strengthen its tower infrastructure and enhance internet service reliability across the nation.
ATC Uganda, which maintains a vast tower network leasing space to major telecommunications providers such as MTN, serves millions of users who depend on its infrastructure for continuous connectivity. To support these operations, NEC XON will deliver hardware, including remote terminal units (RTUs), while ATC will oversee the software component.
NEC XON emphasized that its vendor-neutral hardware underwent rigorous testing and was approved alongside ATC’s former RTU system, which had been in place for over a decade. “ATC requires uninterrupted remote access and detailed visibility across all tower sites. Maintaining operational sites can be costly, and reliable RTUs are crucial for real-time data and proactive monitoring,” the company stated.

The company further explained that managing these sites involves tracking power sources, scheduling fuel deliveries, assessing technical requirements, and maintaining service level agreements with carriers. Smart meters, sensors, and IoT technologies integrated with RTUs enable remote monitoring, offering real-time insights and supporting preventative maintenance efforts.
Through NEC XON’s units, ATC can now efficiently monitor fuel usage, identify active power sources—whether solar, generator, or diesel—and collect data that informs proactive site management, often allowing issues to be resolved before outages occur.
The rollout of this initiative began in December 2021, following the Phase 1 contract award in June 2021. “Hundreds of sites have already been implemented,” noted Tracey Townshend, Key Accounts Executive at NEC XON.
