Lesotho’s Revenue Service (RSL) has launched an online platform that enables clients to pay taxes and file tax returns electronically. This initiative aims to encourage the use of technology and simplify the tax payment process across the country. The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane, praised the move, stating that it is essential for Lesotho to embrace the fourth industrial revolution for economic growth.
According to Dr Matlanyane, the revenue from the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) has been decreasing, which means that there are fewer resources available for financing the national budget. Therefore, the country needs to become self-sufficient in financing its budget. The new e-services provided by RSL allow clients to submit their tax declarations and receive approval in less than 15 minutes.

Mrs. ‘Mathabo Mokoko, the Acting Commissioner General of RSL, expressed the organization’s commitment to improving and simplifying tax payment methods in collaboration with stakeholders in the finance and economic sectors. Mrs. Mokoko emphasized the importance of being a data-driven organization and making data accessible via online platforms to inform decision-making processes.
Vodacom’s Mrs. Mpho Mosotho stated that through the partnership between Vodacom, MPESA and the Department of Financial Services, Basotho can pay taxes for their businesses online. This partnership allows Vodacom customers to fulfill their tax obligations online.
