MTN emerged as the fastest mobile provider in Nigeria during the second half of 2024, dominating key performance metrics across all technologies, including 5G, according to Speedtest Intelligence® data.
With a median 5G download speed of 231.39 Mbps and an upload speed of 17.35 Mbps, MTN outperformed competitors, securing the top spot in Nigeria’s evolving mobile broadband landscape.
The telecom giant also recorded a Speed Score of 79.52 for all technologies combined, surpassing Airtel (15.38 Mbps) and Glo (7.77 Mbps) in median download speeds. Additionally, MTN led in median upload speed at 13.38 Mbps and had the lowest network latency at 48 ms.
Best Gaming and Video Experience
MTN and ipNX also topped rankings for gaming experiences. MTN delivered the best 5G gaming experience in Nigeria, while ipNX led the segment among Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Furthermore, MTN recorded the highest mobile video streaming performance with a Video Streaming Score of 57.25.
Fastest ISP in Nigeria
Among ISPs, ipNX was the fastest in Nigeria during this period, achieving a median download speed of 37.78 Mbps and an upload speed of 38.50 Mbps, reinforcing its position as a top broadband provider.

Consistency and Availability
MTN also excelled in network consistency, with 79.7% of its mobile samples meeting or exceeding the threshold of 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds. Its 5G network maintained the best consistency, with 76.8% of samples surpassing 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. The company also led in 5G availability, with 16.2% of its users accessing its 5G network most of the time.
Regional Performance
Lagos recorded the fastest median mobile download speed among Nigeria’s major cities at 40.26 Mbps, followed by Benin City and Ibadan. In contrast, Kano had the slowest median speed at 18.54 Mbps. MTN dominated five cities, further solidifying its leadership in the mobile broadband sector.
