Kenya plans to lay 100,000km of national fibre optic cable with 52% contribution from private sector
The Kenyan government plans to lay down 100,000 kilometres of national fibre optic cable to improve internet connectivity in the country. ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo announced that the government will be responsible for 52,000 kilometres of the proposed fibre optic cable, while the private sector will handle the rest. Owalo said that meetings have been held to discuss and agree on who rolls out what component of the fibre and the responsibility centres, timelines and targets. The partnership will ensure the security and rapid implementation of 1oT’s M2M global connectivity solutions through Workz’s GSMA-certified eSIMs and data generation services. 1oT’s remote SIM provisioning platform, eSIM Core, which was launched last August, aims to simplify and reduce the cost of connecting IoT devices for businesses. According to the latest predictions by International Data Corporation (IDC), ICT spending in Bahrain is expected to reach $2.03 billion in 2023 and $2.23 billion by 2026. The forecast also reveals that telecommunications services spending in Bahrain will increase, with IT spending set to grow from $0.87 billion in 2023 to $1 billion in 2026. These findings are in line with Bahrain’s Economic Recovery Plan that aims to make the country a digital hub and contribute towards achieving the Kingdom’s comprehensive economic growth and development. Moglix, an e-commerce company, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in artificial intelligence (AI). Western Digital, a US-based data storage supplier, has revealed that it experienced a cyberattack last month, resulting in unauthorised access to multiple company systems, disruption of some business operations and the theft of some data. The incident was detected by the firm’s IT team on March 26 and an investigation is ongoing, with assistance from security and forensic experts and coordination with law enforcement authorities. Western Digital has taken some systems and services offline and is actively working on restoring impacted infrastructure and services. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an Indian IT services company, has received a deal from Bane NOR, a Norwegian government agency, to offer managed cybersecurity services.
