Roberts David Oluwadamilare, a 14 year old student of Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School of Ogun State, Nigeria, has won the maiden Africa Digital Economy Forum Spelling Bee competition.
In a demonstration of its efforts in promoting and building a sustainable intellectual capacity among Africans, Africa Digital Economy Forum (ADEF) a forum promoting Africa’s digital economy agenda recently organized a spelling bee competition to support educational development in Africa.
ADEF Spelling Bee Competition is a literacy program to teach students the effective pronunciation of words, their meaning, and the proper context of usage in the English Language. The Spelling Bee competition creates a platform for students from diverse backgrounds including public and private schools across Africa to engage and compete fairly in their vocabulary and improve their spelling abilities.
Oluwadamilare of Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School of Ogun State, clinched the N30,000 grand prize after outperforming over 30 students who participated in the competition.
Other winners include; Obochi Vera Ifunanya, a 12 years old female from Ajasa Odualabe Community Junior High School, Lagos who finished as the first runner up received a cash prize of N25,000- and 12-year-old Gideon Esther Ini-Abasi from Ijaiye Ojokoro Junior College also in Lagos, Nigeria came third with a cash reward of N20,000.
According to the President of ADEF, Teniola Olushola, ADEF Spelling Bee Competition is a literacy program designed to teach students accurate pronunciation of words and corresponding meaning and proper context of usage of the English Language aimed at enhancing African students’ intellectual capacity.
He said “this competition is to teach students accurate pronunciation of words, meanings and proper context of usage of English Language”
ADEF Spelling Bee Competition was keenly contested by over 30 students of age 9-14 across Africa via Google Meet. The competition was highly successful with participants expressing their delights and excitement about its impact and success.
