Leading payment processing services provider BudPay recently hosted a dynamic event called “FINTECHATHON” in Nairobi, aimed at engaging the local developer community. The event served as a platform for developers to showcase their coding skills, explore new technologies and connect with like-minded individuals.
During the event, BudPay’s CEO, Wale Hassan, expressed the company’s objective of fostering innovation and creativity by granting participants access to BudPay’s technology infrastructure. This allowed developers to build applications that can interact with BudPay’s products and services. The FINTECHATHON focused on key themes such as instant payments, money transfers, public finances, e-commerce, insurtech and fin-edutech.

Participants presented impressive pitches, highlighting the ingenuity and disruptive potential of their technologies across various industries. A panel of judges, consisting of IT enthusiasts, industry experts and seasoned professionals, assessed the practicality and creativity of the solutions. Ultimately, the winning pitch was selected, with Simba Pay, developed by Mr. Gaseema Ndung’u, being crowned the winner of the FINTECHATHON. Simba Pay received a cash prize of $1,000 USD, while LifeLine, led by Mr. David Abolaji Ger and Express Shoppers, led by Mr. Brian Keya, secured second and third place, respectively, earning cash prizes of $700 USD and $500 USD.
