Gulf Bank has opened registrations for the second Gulf Bank “Datathon” competition, following the success of the first edition last year. The event is set to take place on May 12, 2023, at Al Shaheed Park, Phase Two (Multi-Purpose Hall). Registrations will remain open until May 9 and mentoring and learning workshops will be held on May 11. The educational workshops will include three categories: Data Visualization with Tableau, Digital Analytics with Google Analytics and Data Analysis using Python with ChatGPT. Nomo Bank, the digital arm of Bank of London and the Middle East (BLME), has partnered with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) and Al Hilal Digital Bank to offer its services to customers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under the agreement, Nomo’s digital services and products will be available to customers via the ADCB-Nomo and Al Hilal Nomo apps. Omantel, a telecom company based in Oman, is partnering with BankDhofar, one of Oman’s leading banks, to provide a hybrid cloud solution for the bank over the next five years. The partnership aims to streamline BankDhofar’s operations, enabling it to focus on strategic initiatives while avoiding capacity constraints and reducing operational expenses. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has successfully launched its second nanosatellite, DEWA SAT-2, via the Falcon 9 rocket of SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Developed by Emiratis at DEWA’s Research and Development Centre in collaboration with NanoAvionics in Lithuania, the 6U nanosatellite is equipped with a high-resolution camera for Earth observation missions, providing continuous line-scan imaging in seven spectral bands from an orbit of approximately 500km. The satellite also features Infrared equipment to measure greenhouse gases. The Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with R3 to collaborate on initiatives to accelerate the development of Qatar’s financial technology industry. Under the partnership, the two organisations will work together to create a potential lab environment catering to commercial banks and fintechs in Qatar. Additionally, the partnership aims to promote education and training on asset digitisation and the use of distributed ledger technology (DLT). The competition was organized by the MENA Insurtech Association, which held the Insurtech Ghabga Night at the Microsoft office in Lusail, Qatar. Cassava Technologies has pledged a total of R4.5 billion in investment in South Africa through its business units – Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa Data Centres and Distributed Power Africa.
