Microsoft is reportedly developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip called ‘Athena,’ which will be used to train large language models (LLMs) and reduce the company’s reliance on chipmaker Nvidia. The Information reported that Microsoft has been working on the project since 2019.

According to the news report, Athena will initially use the TSMC 5nm process, with plans to create several more generations of chips in the future. By building its own chips, Microsoft hopes to save on overhead costs by reducing its reliance on Nvidia, which is currently the main supplier of AI server chips.
The Verge reported that the demand for high-end chips that can help deploy AI software is illustrated by the fact that Microsoft’s latest H100 GPUs are selling for more than $40,000 on eBay.
