Artificial intelligence (AI) startup, OpenAI has partnered the Financial Times (FT), allowing the AI research organisation to licence FT’s content for the development of its AI models.
The financial terms of the agreement, announced on Monday, 29th April have not been disclosed. According to Reuters, this deal follows similar agreements by OpenAI in recent months with other prominent media organisations, including the Associated Press, Axel Springer, Le Monde, and Prisa Media.
Under the terms of the agreement, OpenAI will leverage archived content from the FT to enhance its ChatGPT chatbot. Additionally, the two entities will collaborate to develop new AI products and features tailored for FT readers. Summaries generated by ChatGPT using FT content will include links back to the newspaper, ensuring proper attribution.
FT Group CEO, John Ridding, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the potential for practical outcomes regarding news sources and AI. ChatGPT, which sparked the Generative AI boom in late 2022, has the capability to mimic human conversation and perform various tasks, including summarising text, writing poetry, and generating ideas for themed events.
Some media outlets have already begun using generative AI technology for content creation. BuzzFeed, for example, plans to employ AI for personality quizzes on its website, while the New York Times utilised ChatGPT to develop a Valentine’s Day message-generator last year.
