Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijiani, has emphasized the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive development in Nigeria.
Dr. Bosun Tijiani made this known while speaking at the AI Safety Summit 2023 held at Bletchley Park in the UK, from Wednesday, 1st November, to Thursday, 2nd November. In a LinkedIn post, he stated that he was honoured to share insights at the summit, alongside other dignitaries of information and communication technology (ICT) from around the world.
The Summit, which saw over 25 countries attending, including the US and China, provided a platform for global stakeholders, including government representatives, leading AI companies, research experts, and civil society groups to converge and discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by AI technologies.
The Minister highlighted that Nigeria, with its vibrant community of innovators and entrepreneurs, must recognise AI’s significance and its potential for positive impact on humanity. He stressed the urgency of exploring and leveraging AI to promote economic growth, address societal challenges, and foster technological advancement in the country.
He noted during his speech at the summit that “AI at its very core offers our generation a historical opportunity to create ubiquitous access to insight and intelligence for global development. However, we must remain conscious of the need to ensure the safe, ethical and inclusive development of this phenomenon.”
Dr. Tijiani has also expressed his gratitude to the United Kingdom Government for extending Nigeria an invitation to participate in the UK AI for Development Programme.
“This partnership is a recognition of our commitment to the growth of AI in Nigeria as outlined in our Strategic Blueprint and evidenced by our initial launch of the National AI Research Scheme.” Dr. Tijiani stated in his post.
The National AI Research Scheme demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to harnessing the innovative technology’s potential. The Ministry is actively working to create an enabling environment for AI research, development, and application, with a focus on fostering innovation, improving services, and addressing various societal needs.
The Minister’s participation in the AI Safety Summit 2023 reinforces Nigeria’s position as a committed player in the global AI landscape.
