MTN Ghana, has revealed new tariffs for calls, SMS, data and other services, effective Tuesday, 28th November 2023, saying it was prompted by NCA regulatory requirements, after being declared a Dominant/Significant Market Power (SMP) in 2020.
Besides the NCA regulations, MTN reached out to its customers days before the increments, alerting them that prices would be increased due to operational charges.
The new tariffs affect MTN’s fixed and mobile broadband bundles, as well as its voice and SMS offerings. On data bundles, MTN’s 4.3-gigabyte Turbonet fixed bundle now sells for GH₵ 43, while a 91-gigabyte bundle has been adjusted to GH₵ 253, and a 350-gigabyte bundle is now available for GH₵516. Also, a 39-gigabyte Broadband Special Bundle is now priced at GH₵150, while a 195-gigabyte bundle goes for GH₵300.
Regular data bundle prices were also affected, as seen in the image below.
Voice and SMS, New Tariffs
- On-net voice calls: GH₵ 0.15 per minute
- Off-net voice calls: GH₵ 0.18 per minute
- International voice calls: GH₵ 0.30 per minute
- On-net SMS: GH₵ 0.05 per message
- Off-net SMS: GH₵ 0.07 per message
- International SMS: GH₵ 0.10 per message
MTN Ghana said the tariff adjustments reflect its commitment to comply with regulatory requirements, as well as its continuous investment in network infrastructure and service quality. The company also said it remains focused on delivering value to its customers, urging them to take advantage of its various promotions and offers, such as the MTN Mashup, MTN MoMo, and MTN Ayoba.
MTN Ghana is the leading telecom company in the country. An NCA 2022 report showed that the Telco held 63% of the mobile voice share market, 72% for mobile data, and 78% of the 4G operator’s market share. MTN’s 2023 Q3 report on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) also showed a profit after tax of GH¢ 2.8 billion in its 2023 Q3. This represents a 32% increase over the same period last year.
The company, which has the largest subscriber base among telecommunications companies in the country, said the impact of the NCA’s directive on SIM disconnections continued to impact its subscriber base, resulting in a 9.3% year over year (YoY) decrease to 25.8 million.
