Due to the removal of Canada’s Facebook news tab, Meta is set to eliminate Facebook’s new tabs in several countries. With effect from December, the news section of the platform will no longer be seen in the United Kingdom (UK), France, and Germany. This is to invest more and develop services and products that the users value more.
Meta, which confirmed that it is committed to the existing agreements with publishers in the UK, France, and Germany as to Facebook news made it known that new products that are tailored to news will not be introduced in the future nor will it renew its agreement in these countries.
Meta asserts that users are focused on short-form videos, connecting with others, and discovering opportunities, interests, and passions than exploring news content.
Meta blocked news content in Canada due to a protest of a proposed law that would require payment to the publishers in the country, however, the country has been assured that news links, reels and other content can be shared on Facebook.
Meta which moved to using algorithms to feature stories on the new tab, made it known when launching Threads that news is not a primary focus there. The current decision of Meta is because users do not explore news content and efforts are being made to channel resources to the content users explore the more.
