Meta’s text-based social network, Threads, has achieved under 100 million monthly users three months after its launch, according to the company.
Founder and CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said during the latest earnings call that the company is pleased with Threads’ progress and believes it could reach a billion users in the next few years. However, it should be noted that monthly active users may not be the best measure of engagement on a social network.
Threads’ rival X (formerly Twitter) has almost 550 million monthly active users, according to Elon Musk. While Meta did not disclose daily active user numbers for Threads, it is believed to have nearly five times fewer daily active users than at its launch in July.
Meta’s messaging app, Threads, has struggled to maintain user engagement since its launch, despite reaching 100 million signups within a week.
The company has added several features, including post search, a web version, and an edit button, and is working on upcoming features such as trending posts and separate account deletion from Instagram.
However, Threads is still not available in the EU, and the biggest challenge for the platform is to increase engagement and grow its community. While Threads aims to empower creators, it has blocked searches for health-related terms such as ‘Covid’ and ‘vaccines,’ but plans to lift the ban soon.
The platform may become a place for real-time events, but it will take time to build high engagement for pop culture and sports events.
