The Ministry of Education (MoE) of India, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) of Zanzibar, Tanzania, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the first-ever Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus outside India.
IIT Madras and MoEVT Zanzibar will collaborate to establish the IIT campus, symbolizing the continuous friendship between these countries.
The agreement was signed in the presence of the President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, and the External Affairs Minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, highlighting the focus on people-to-people ties and strengthening educational partnerships.
This move aligns with India’s commitment to fostering internationalization and building global relationships. With the launch of programs in October 2023, the campus will offer interdisciplinary degrees, attract diverse students from Africa and beyond, and award IIT Madras degrees.
This strategic partnership between Tanzania and India will enhance India’s global reputation and diplomatic relationships while expanding IIT Madras’ international footprint. The IIT campus in Zanzibar aims to be a world-class higher education and research institution, fostering competencies in response to emerging global needs and promoting research and innovation in the region. With the framework in place, this collaboration showcases the aspirational qualities of Indian higher education and innovation.
