Ericsson has unveiled a new software solution called RedCap, which aims to enable and enhance 5G use cases for a wide range of devices including smartwatches, wearables and industrial sensors. RedCap, a reduced capability RAN software, reduces complexity and extends battery life, offering improved connectivity for these devices.
Expected to be commercially available in November 2023, RedCap will be introduced as a software addition to existing 5G standalone (5G SA) networks powered by Ericsson. No new hardware will be required for its implementation. This software solution, without compromising performance, will strengthen the ecosystem for different types of devices that can connect to 5G networks.
