Andela has announced the appointment of Carrol Chang as its new CEO. Chang will replace Jeremy Johnson, Andela’s co-founder, who is stepping down from the role but will remain on the company’s board.
Chang is set to join Andela’s board on September 17. She brings extensive experience from her previous roles as the global head of driver and courier operations at Uber and has also held positions at McKinsey & Company and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Chang stated, “I am deeply grateful for the privilege to lead Andela. It’s rare to find a mission-driven company with the potential to create a category-defining business. I’m inspired by the way Jeremy has led Andela to this point, and I appreciate the trust he and the board now put in me to carry forward its mission.”

Chang’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the ten-year-old company as it aims to capture a larger share of the global talent market. Andela, which initially focused on training African software developers for roles at U.S. companies, has evolved into a global talent marketplace. The company reached unicorn status in 2021 after securing $200 million in a Series E funding round led by SoftBank. In the same year, Andela expanded its operations to Latin America.
In 2023, Andela further strengthened its position by acquiring Qualified, an assessment platform that certifies top engineering talent, for an undisclosed amount.
Reflecting on his tenure, Johnson said, “After ten years, I’m deeply proud of the change we’ve helped to catalyze. That said, it’s clear that global hiring is at the beginning of a complete digital transformation, and Carrol is the perfect leader both for Andela’s next stage of growth and to help usher in the era of talent marketplaces.”
Founded in 2014, Andela quickly became a premier source of talented developers in Africa, thanks to its rigorous curriculum and training methodology. The company claims to have trained more than 110,000 tech talents across Africa and has supported individuals from over 135 countries in building world-class careers.
