MTN Nigeria, in partnership with Huawei, has launched the country’s first hybrid 400G-800G Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON), setting a new benchmark for high-speed connectivity in West Africa.
Unveiled today, this innovative network marks a pivotal moment in strengthening Nigeria’s digital backbone, delivering unprecedented transmission speeds and resilience to meet the surging demand for data.
The hybrid ASON integrates 400G and 800G high-speed optical channels, positioning MTN Nigeria at the forefront of broadband innovation. By leveraging Huawei’s cutting-edge 400G/800G platforms, including advanced Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) systems and hybrid ASON architecture, the network achieves rapid data transmission while reducing operational costs and enhancing service agility.

A key highlight is the deployment of Nigeria’s first single-wavelength 800G optical channel, alongside the activation of L0 + L1 ASON (optical and electrical automatic switching) on the Lagos segment of MTN’s dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) backbone—both technological firsts for the nation.
This transformative project aims to enhance access to cloud services, enterprise platforms, and home broadband connectivity by boosting bandwidth capacity and network intelligence. It aligns with MTN Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the country’s national digital economy agenda, addressing the growing need for robust and reliable infrastructure.
Yahaya Ibrahim, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, emphasized the project’s significance: “The growing demand for high-performance networks requires intelligent and scalable solutions. With this deployment, we’ve significantly improved the capacity and resilience of our network, ensuring more reliable service for homes, businesses, and data-intensive applications.”
