The Digital Economy Magazine has named Kenya’s Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, John Kipchumba Tanui, MBS, as its Personality of the Week.
An alumnus of the University of Nairobi, where he attained an MBA in International Business, and Moi University, where he earned a B. Tech in Electrical and Communication Engineering, Eng. John Tanui has proven himself keen on leveraging innovative technologies to solve the most pressing challenges facing Africa’s economies.

Eng. John Tanui holds over 24 years of experience in the technology sector globally, beginning his career as a trainee engineer at Pegrume in 1998. That same year, he joined Telema Communications as an engineer staying for two years.
In 2000, Eng. Tanui joined Huawei, Kenya. Within a span of 15 years, he rose from an engineer at Huawei Kenya to the position of Deputy CEO. During his tenure, Huawei was actively involved in developing Kenya’s telecommunications infrastructure, helping deploy 3G, 4G networks across the country, and developing digital skills among the youth.

As Kenya’s Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, a position he has held since December 2022, Eng. Tanui has worked to ensure Kenya stays in the digitalisation race. His office has launched the Cisco Cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre at the University of Nairobi, Chiromo Campus, advocated the digitalisation of Kenya’s libraries, provided support in establishing data centres, and sought partnerships with foreign entities like the Korea International Cooperation Agency, on how to use technology to address climate change and promote animal welfare, boost productivity and promote sustainable market chains.

Outside his role at the State Department for ICT & Digital Economy, Eng. Tanui serves as the president of the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP).
