GitHub, the developer platform owned by Microsoft, has laid off nearly all of its engineering team in India, as part of a cost-cutting move in response to weaker global market conditions. Over 100 jobs in the South Asian market have been cut, according to a person familiar with the matter. Employees were informed of the cuts on Tuesday, March 28. The layoffs are likely part of a broader streamlining effort announced by GitHub in early February, when the company said it planned to cut approximately 10% of its workforce by the end of March.

India is a significant developer market and serves as a key engineering hub for many large companies. It is unclear whether GitHub plans to continue operations in India or how the layoffs will affect the company’s global business strategy. Microsoft declined to comment on the job cuts.
