The Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has unveiled plans to establish an innovation centre aimed at fostering digital creativity and problem-solving among the youth.
Dubbed the ‘maker space,’ this innovation hub will serve as an active platform for students to explore, experiment, and collaborate on digital solutions. The Director-General, Prof. Francis Davis made this announcement during the celebration of World Engineering Day at the KNUST College of Engineering.
The initiative seeks to create an encouraging environment for nurturing the next generation of engineers and innovators. Prof. Davis stressed the importance of making engineering attractive to young minds, saying it was vital for building a sustainable future.
The World Engineering Day 2024, held under the theme “Engineering solutions for a sustainable world,” was a collaborative effort between KNUST’s College of Engineering and the Ghana Institution of Engineering. The event witnessed the participation of several schools from the Ashanti region.
Representing the Ghana Institution of Engineers, Ing. Yaa Obenewaa Okudzeto highlighted the institution’s commitment to sustainable development and the provision of resilient infrastructure. She also noted that engineering played a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals.
Present at the event, the Chief Programme Officer at the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Apollonius Asare, repeated UNESCO’s commitment to supporting young engineers through various fellowship programs. He pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to promote STEM education and mentorship opportunities for emerging engineers.
The Provost of KNUST’s College of Engineering, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, also expressed optimism about the positive impact engineers can make on the world. He stressed the importance of engineers not only as problem solvers but also as proactive problem preventers, driven by passion and ethics.
The launch of the digital innovation hub marks a significant step towards nurturing innovation and creativity in Ghana’s engineering landscape, by paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future.
