Disney has reportedly disbanded its metaverse division, leading to the dismissal of around 50 employees, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. This move comes as part of the company’s plan to reduce its workforce by nearly 7,000 people.
Mike White, who was leading the metaverse team, will reportedly remain with Disney, although his new role within the company remains unclear.

The metaverse division was established in February 2022 as part of Disney’s “next-generation storytelling” initiative, which aimed to explore the possibilities of the metaverse. While the company suggested that the technology could be used in consumer experiences such as theme park events and fantasy sports, details about the plan remained vague.
This decision comes after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his company’s commitment to the metaverse in October 2021 and changed its name to Meta to reflect that vision.
