Verizon Communications has named Santiago “Yago” Tenorio as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Senior Vice President of Strategy and Technology Enablement.
Tenorio, who brings over 25 years of experience in the wireless industry, will lead Verizon’s next wave of technology innovation. He will report directly to Joe Russo, Executive Vice President and President of Global Network and Technology.
“As we continue advancing our 5G and 5G-advanced network builds, now is the time to focus on the future technologies Verizon will enable,” said Russo. “As we enter the next chapter, our priority is positioning Verizon for success by maintaining our commitment to building and operating the best, most reliable, and secure networks that power the way customers live, work, and play.”

Tenorio, formerly with Vodafone, is known for his leadership in developing Open RAN, Cloud Networking, and Network APIs. He has previously held key roles at Vodafone, including CTO for Vodafone Ireland and Chief Network Officer in the UK, where he led the network coverage for the 2012 London Olympics. His career achievements earned him a prestigious fellowship at the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK.
In his new role at Verizon, Tenorio will oversee the development of new 5G use cases, work with partners to drive technological advancements and shape the future of Verizon’s services. He will officially begin his duties on October 28, 2024, leading Verizon’s Strategy and Technology Enablement (STE) team.
