Tech giants Nvidia and OpenAI are planning to invest billions of dollars in developing advanced data centres in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with London-based data centre operator Nscale Global Holdings Ltd, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.
The announcement coincides with an upcoming state visit by US President Donald Trump , highlighting the strategic importance of the initiative.
The UK government will support the project by supplying energy for the new facilities, while OpenAI will provide access to its cutting-edge AI tools, and Nvidia will contribute its advanced semiconductor chips, known for powering AI and high-performance computing. This partnership builds on the companies’ recent collaboration, which saw the joint release of two open-source AI models earlier this year.

The investment follows OpenAI’s separate $500 billion commitment with Japan’s SoftBank Group to expand data centre infrastructure in the United States, signaling a global push to enhance AI capabilities. The UK project is poised to bolster the country’s position as a hub for technological innovation, with potential economic benefits through job creation and infrastructure development.
The timing of the announcement aligns with President Trump’s visit, during which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will join other industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, BlackRock Chairman and CEO Larry Fink, and Blackstone head Stephen Schwarzman, at a state banquet hosted by King Charles at Windsor Castle, as reported by Sky News. The gathering underscores the high-level interest in fostering technological and economic ties between the US and UK.
This development comes as part of a broader trend of increased investment in digital infrastructure, with the UK private sector showing sustained growth, according to recent economic indicators.
