MTN Group has unveiled a strategic leadership reshuffle across its East African operations, appointing new chief executives for its Rwanda and South Sudan subsidiaries. The changes are part of the Group’s Ambition 2025 strategy, aimed at accelerating growth across its fintech, digital, and enterprise platforms throughout the continent.
Mapula Bodibe, the outgoing CEO of MTN Rwanda, has been appointed to lead MTN South Sudan. Since assuming her role in Rwanda in 2022, Bodibe has spearheaded key initiatives including the launch of MTN’s proprietary 4G network, a government-backed low-cost smartphone project called Ikosora, and a significant network upgrade in Kigali in partnership with Ericsson. She also led Rwanda’s first live 5G technology demonstration, cementing MTN’s reputation for innovation in the region.
MTN South Sudan is pleased to announce Mapula Bodibe as our new CEO. With over 25 years of experience—17 of which in executive leadership—she brings a wealth of expertise from her previous roles in MTN South Africa and Uganda. We’re confident she will drive our vision of digital inclusion through investment in world-class networks and innovative solutions,” the company said in a statement.
Taking over from Bodibe in Rwanda is Ali Monzer, the former CEO of MTN South Sudan. Monzer brings more than 20 years of telecom experience and is credited with stabilising the South Sudan operation during a period marked by hyperinflation, currency volatility, and civil unrest. Under his leadership, MTN South Sudan recorded real revenue growth, gained market share, and reclaimed the top spot in Net Promoter Score rankings, reflecting improved customer satisfaction.

In a statement, MTN Rwanda expressed both gratitude and optimism during the leadership handover: “We celebrated an incredible journey with our outgoing CEO, Mapula Bodibe—thank you for your leadership, passion, and heart. And with open arms, we welcomed our new CEO, Monzer Ali. We’re excited for the bold moments ahead.”
These appointments reflect MTN Group’s continued commitment to its Ambition 2025 strategy, which aims to transform the company into Africa’s largest and most valuable platform business by deepening digital adoption, expanding financial inclusion, and fostering localised operational excellence.
With over 289 million subscribers across Africa, MTN Group remains the continent’s largest mobile network operator. The new CEOs are expected to assume their roles in the coming weeks.
