Microsoft Africa has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at equipping four million African youths with future-ready skills in digital, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies by 2030.
The announcement was made by Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, during the company’s AI Tour 2025 in Johannesburg.
Speaking on the transformative potential of AI in a presentation titled “AI is Driving Transformation,” Barnard highlighted the unique opportunity Africa’s youthful demographic presents.
With 60% of its population under the age of 35, she stressed that embracing emerging technologies is critical to unlocking economic growth across the continent.
“We have set an ambitious target to deliver future-ready skills to four million African youth in digital, cybersecurity, and AI technologies,” Barnard stated. “By providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well-positioned to compete on the global stage.”
The initiative includes the launch of the AI Skills Navigator portal, a free-to-learn platform where individuals can assess their current AI knowledge and access tailored resources to build their skills.
The program aims to broaden participation in the digital economy, fostering a culture of innovation and ensuring African youth are prepared for emerging roles in technology.

“This program is not just about employment but about fostering a culture of innovation. Digital skills are the foundation of modern innovation,” Barnard added, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with ICT training providers, government entities, NGOs, and both public and private sector stakeholders to scale the initiative.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 underscores the urgency of this effort, noting that over 60% of companies identify skills gaps as a major barrier to economic transformation by 2030.
Barnard echoed these concerns, stating, “By 2030, the continent could become a more significant player in the global economy, drawing on AI to revolutionize industries and boost productivity.”
Microsoft’s skilling initiative aligns with its broader mission to empower individuals and organizations with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age. By addressing the skills gap and leveraging AI’s transformative potential, the company aims to position Africa as a leading force in the global digital economy.
“Together, by delivering on the promise of AI, we can chart a course for Africa to become the next global economic powerhouse,” Barnard concluded.
