Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the creation of a new product group focused on generative AI, which uses machine learning techniques to allow computers to create text, images, and other media that resemble human output. The move comes as technology companies and well-funded startups race to incorporate artificial intelligence models into their products.
The new unit will combine several teams across Meta and be organized under Chief Product Officer Chris Cox. The team will create “creative and expressive” tools to be used within Meta’s products, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The team will explore experiences with text, images, video, and multi-modal experiences.

Last week, Meta announced its own new large language model called LLaMA. The company said that its models are different because they are available to researchers and are smaller and less expensive to use than larger models.
Meta’s announcement comes after Snap announced on Monday that it is integrating a ChatGPT bot, a large language model created by OpenAI, into its Snapchat app. Google is also reportedly working on a chatbot named Bard.
The new product group at Meta underscores the company’s ongoing research into artificial intelligence and its commitment to staying competitive in the AI space.
