The Minister for Communications and Digitalization of Ghana, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has stated that, all SIM cards in Ghana that are yet to be fully registered will be disconnected by the end of the month of November.
The statement was contained in a press release signed by the Minister on Friday November 11, 2022. The Minister indicated that, there were still many SIM cards that had gone through the first phase of the registration but were still yet to complete phase two of the exercise, and so as a result, would be blocked if not fully registered by the deadline.
“Despite ample opportunity afforded all to complete the registration of their SIM cards, some who have the Ghana cards and have begun the process have failed to complete the registration. That is their choice and we cannot begrudge them. All SIM cards which have completed the first stage of the registration exercise but not done the second phase will be blocked from accessing data services on 20th November 2022 and completely deactivated on 30th November 2022.” she stated.
Conversely, the Minister also indicated that discourses were still in progress to address grievances of SIM card owners who were yet to register due to their inability to acquire the mandatory Ghana Card for the registration process.
“A further announcement will be made shortly on measures to accommodate those who genuinely do not have Ghana cards, once the ongoing consultations have been completed.” she highlighted.
Furthermore, Mrs. Ekuful seized the opportunity to commend the work done so far with regards to the registration exercise, and reiterated the commitment of Government to proliferate digital platforms that are safe, reliable and accessible to all Ghanaians.
“I would like to applaud all players in the SIM Registration Exercise value chain on the achievements attained so far. The Government is working to provide an enabling environment for all to access and use digital platforms by fostering the development of these technologies including SIM enabled ones.”
“I urge all to support this registration initiative and cooperate with the authorities to ensure its success for our collective good.” she further pleaded.
