Safaricom, a leading telecommunications company, has announced the appointment of Boniface Mungania as its new Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation, effective April 1st, 2023. In this role, he will report to the Chief Executive Officer, Peter Ndegwa, and be responsible for forming partnerships with the public sector to drive digital transformation at the national and county government level.
Boniface’s job will include identifying opportunities for government digitization through technology, and recommending the best solutions to the relevant authorities. He will also lead the design and implementation of innovative digital transformation programs within the sector.
Previously, Boniface served as the acting Chief Financial Services Officer and has held various leadership positions in the company’s financial services division since 2007. He has been instrumental in the development of M-PESA, a popular mobile payment service, and was appointed Payments Tribe Lead in October 2021.

The CEO Peter Ndegwa praised Boniface for his leadership of the financial services team over the past months, saying “I would like to thank Boniface Mungania for his leadership of the Financial Services Team over the last 8 months. During this period, we have made great strides in delivering our Financial Services mission, including receiving regulatory approval for some of our strategic initiatives, as well as launching platforms such as M-PESA Go and supporting the government to launch the Hustler Fund.”
Boniface’s appointment reflects Safaricom’s commitment to digital transformation and its continued efforts to drive innovation and growth in the public sector.
