Bharti Airtel has successfully landed the SEA-ME-WE 6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-West Europe-6) submarine cable in Chennai, further enhancing India’s global digital connectivity.
The 21,700 Rkm submarine cable, which links India to Singapore and France via terrestrial cables through Egypt, was previously landed in Mumbai on December 30, 2024.
The project, developed in partnership with SubCom, a leading provider of subsea fibre optic cable systems, ensures robust engineering, manufacturing, and installation for seamless global data transmission.
Commenting on the milestone, Sharat Sinha, Director and CEO at Airtel Business, said, “At Airtel, we strive to provide best-in-class services to our customers. This investment will further enhance our secure, diverse, and scalable global network.
We are delighted to strengthen our global connectivity by landing one of the largest cable systems into our facilities, complementing our existing network of 400,000 Rkms across 50 countries.”

The SEA-ME-WE 6 cable, which Airtel has integrated with its data center arm, Nxtra by Airtel, in Mumbai and Chennai, will provide global hyperscalers and businesses in India with seamless international connectivity and data center services.
As a key member of the SEA-ME-WE-6 consortium, Airtel has invested in the core cable and developed a private network with four fiber pairs connecting Singapore, Chennai, and Mumbai. The system will deliver 220TBPs of global capacity to India, significantly strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure.
With investments in 34 subsea cables, Airtel continues to expand its global network across five continents. Recent projects, including 2Africa, Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2 (SJC2), and Equiano, reinforce its commitment to connecting India with key regions across APAC, Europe, the Middle East, and the US.
