Airtel Money, Centenary Bank and gnuGrid have launched Kwaata Sente, a digital lending service designed to improve access to short-term credit for eligible Airtel Money customers. The service allows users to apply for loans without conventional collateral or visiting a bank branch, subject to approval.

Speaking at the launch, Centenary Bank Managing Director Godfrey Byekwaso said the partnership would extend the bank’s reach beyond its existing customer base, building on its digital banking services to serve more Ugandans. He explained, “You don’t have to be a Centenary Bank customer to access these services.”

The partnership aims to make credit available to people who may otherwise have limited access to traditional banking services.

gnuGrid Technologies Managing Director Opio Obwangamoi David highlighted the role of digital footprints in assessing creditworthiness. The approach uses customers’ digital information to support lending decisions, offering an alternative to conventional credit requirements.

Airtel Money Managing Director Japhet Aritho stressed that expanding access to digital loans must go hand in hand with responsible borrowing. He noted that digital credit should help customers manage financial needs and pursue economic opportunities rather than lead them into unsustainable debt. Borrowers are encouraged to understand loan terms, borrow within their means and repay on time.

Kwaata Sente offers loans starting from UGX 10,000, depending on each customer’s approved limit. Once approved, funds are sent directly to the customer’s Airtel Money wallet, bringing mobile money, banking and technology together to simplify access to credit.

The launch marks a step towards expanding financial inclusion in Uganda. Through their partnership, Airtel Money, Centenary Bank and gnuGrid aim to create greater access to credit while supporting responsible lending and a sustainable digital credit ecosystem.
