PawaPay has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence from the Bank of Mozambique through its local subsidiary, Quidexplus Mozambique, allowing the payments aggregator to onboard merchants directly in the country. The licence was announced on 8 October 2026 in Maputo.

The authorization enables PawaPay to begin commercial operations in Mozambique, with merchant on-boarding expected to start within days. The company says it is among the first businesses licensed to operate as a PSP in the country.

The license will allow PawaPay to establish direct relationships with Mozambican businesses and connect them to mobile money services used by their customers, reducing reliance on third-party payment arrangements.

According to PawaPay, the license addresses challenges faced by businesses seeking reliable payment infrastructure to operate at scale in the market. It will enable merchants to use a regulated payment intermediary to collect, process and settle transactions through a more consolidated arrangement.

The Mozambique approval follows a similar authorization from the Central Bank of Kenya in September 2026. The two approvals reflect PawaPay’s move towards securing regulatory license through its own local entities in individual markets.

The company serves sectors including ride-hailing, remittances, retail and non-governmental organisations, which rely on dependable local payment collection and payout services. Its new licence creates an opportunity to serve businesses directly in Mozambique’s mobile money market.
