Kenya’s State Department for ICT and Digital Economy is exploring a potential partnership with Equity Group to strengthen digital infrastructure, promote financial inclusion and expand regional trade as part of the country’s broader digital economy development efforts.
On 6 October 2026, John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, met with Equity Group Managing Director and CEO James Mwangi and his team at the group’s headquarters to discuss possible areas of collaboration.
The discussions centred on how cooperation between the government and financial institutions could link digital infrastructure with financial services and business development, helping more people participate in economic activities and supporting cross-border trade.

Tanui underscored the role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in improving access to financial services, easing operational barriers for businesses and enabling enterprises to access markets across Kenya and other parts of Africa.
The meeting also addressed financial inclusion, particularly how digital payment systems, financing options and market access solutions could help small businesses and underserved communities become more involved in the formal economy. These tools could also support business expansion and improve competitiveness.
The engagement aligns with Kenya’s broader objective of developing a connected digital ecosystem where public infrastructure and private-sector innovation complement each other to facilitate transactions, strengthen businesses and promote inclusive economic growth.
Tanui noted that achieving these objectives would depend on effective cooperation among government institutions, financial service providers, technology companies and businesses to ensure digital transformation delivers tangible economic benefits to Kenyans.
