Meta has introduced Muse, a personal AI agent designed to help users achieve their goals by proactively suggesting ideas and carrying out tasks on their behalf. Unlike traditional AI assistants that mainly respond to prompts, Muse is built to take action, coordinate tasks and continue working toward a user’s goals. It is available through the dedicated Muse app and WhatsApp, using a conversational experience similar to messaging another person.

Muse operates through Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine designed to keep the AI agent and a user’s data within a secure environment. The agent is powered by Muse Spark, which Meta describes as its most capable AI model to date, developed specifically for real-world agentic tasks that require planning, decision-making and execution.

Users can simply tell Muse what they want to accomplish, without needing technical knowledge or learning complicated commands. The agent can handle everyday tasks such as sending emails and booking travel, while also helping with larger goals by developing personalised plans, managing resources and coordinating activities. It can browse the web, complete forms and even negotiate on a user’s behalf where appropriate.

Muse is also designed to continue working on longer-running tasks after the user closes the app. It can return when circumstances change or when it needs the user’s approval before taking an important action, such as sending an email or completing a purchase. This approach could allow users to delegate more complex tasks while remaining in control of major decisions.

For online purchases, Muse can use Link by Stripe, with the agent receiving access to a one-time-use card that keeps the user’s actual card details hidden. Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link’s purchase protections, which include coverage for eligible damaged or lost items, price drops, no-fee returns and return guarantees. Meta also plans to add Shop Pay and 1Password support.

Another key feature is Muse’s ability to remember information that users have previously shared. This allows it to make personalised suggestions without being prompted each time. For example, it could turn a recipe saved on Instagram into a shopping list, recommend a dinner-party menu and take guests’ dietary requirements into account when helping organise invitations.

Meta says it plans to introduce Muse Confidential VM later this year, adding another layer of privacy by encrypting the entire virtual machine, including users’ data and conversations, with a key controlled only by the user. Muse is initially rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and muse.ai, with availability planned for AI glasses. The service will offer free access for common tasks, alongside subscription options for users who require more advanced capabilities.
