After a temporary ban over data privacy concerns last month, Italy has lifted its block on ChatGPT. The AI chatbot platform is now available to users in Italy again. OpenAI, the US firm behind ChatGPT, stated that they are committed to protecting users’ personal data. ChatGPT generates text in a more sophisticated way than traditional chatbots, using written prompts to generate responses. Although the platform quickly became popular, some critics have raised concerns about how ChatGPT collects and processes data.
Global tech experts and leaders have recently called on the AI community to “pause” the development of AI solutions like GPT-4, citing concerns that the AI race is going too rapidly for anyone to understand or control. Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple and Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter, are among the experts who have made this call.
In March, Italy became the first Western country to block ChatGPT due to concerns about the mass collection and storage of personal data. OpenAI has since made changes to its policies, including providing information on how it collects and uses training data and implementing a tool to verify users’ age in Italy upon login. The Italian Authority has acknowledged OpenAI’s efforts to balance technological progress with people’s rights.
